This little cutie is a hatchling green anole, native to the Southern US.
Anoles have thousands of microscopic hairs, called setae, on each of their toe pads. These hairs generate electromagnetic forces through friction that allow them to climb vertically up many smooth surfaces. In fact, their climbing abilities and toepad “stickiness” is second only to the geckos! Green anoles can be found perching on tree branches from which they can scan for prey/predators and communicate to potential mates or rivals with head bobs and flashes of their brightly colored throat (dewlap). #localwildlife #herpetology #wildlifeeducation #animals #wildlife #lizardsofinstagram #reptilesofinstagram #lizard #fieldherping

The horseshoe crab!
These critters have been roaming the sea floors, virtually unchanged, since before the time of the dinosaurs! Truly earning them the title of “living fossil”. There are four different species alive today but despite their name, they are actually more closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs. Horseshoe crabs have ten eyes. The two largest and most developed are compound eyes, which aid them in finding a mate. In the end of spring, hundreds of thousands will storm the coasts during high tide of a new or full moon to breed and nest. #sciencecommunication #wildlifeeducation #animals #wildlife #localwildlife #arthropods #sealife #marinelife #seafarer The Laysan albatross has an impressive 6ft wingspan and can cover ~350 miles in a day, taking short naps while in flight!
They can live >65yrs and at 8yrs will choose a mate that they will keep for life—bonding through an elaborate courtship “dance”. Sadly, albatrosses often consume bottle caps, beads, pens etc. floating in the ocean; mistaking plastic for food, they then feed these items to their chicks. The chicks either choke or starve with a stomach full of plastic. This is common in many species and it is estimated that 90% of ALL seabirds have ingested some form of plastic. You can help save seabirds and other wildlife by recycling, not littering, and choosing reusable alternatives over single-use plastics! As grazers, they play an important role in nutrient cycling of the African savannah. Herds consist of 5-20 females (& their young) and one adult male that fiercely patrols the radius of the herd, occasionally fighting off rivals. Roan antelope are formidable adversaries and can even fend off adult lion’s using their long curved horns. #wildlifephotography #africa #antelope #worthmorealive #sciencecommunication #africanamazing #worthmorealive #animals #willife #wildlifeeducation Let the monkey business begin, it’s international monkey day!!
(1) L’Hoest’s monkey, of eastern Africa, lives in groups of 10-17 females and 1 male who constantly has to fight off rival males trying to displace him. Sadly, their populations are in decline from deforestation & bushmeat hunting and they are listed as a vulnerable species. (2) Long-tailed macaques are opportunistic omnivores foraging for anything from fish, fruit, leaves, birds and reptiles. In some places of SE Asia they swim quite well, diving for crustaceans in the mangroves. (3) Yellow Baboons live in the savannah and bushland of central Africa. They have an average troop size of 39 individuals, but some baboon species have troops as high as 300! Studies show baboons can use up to 30 different calls to communicate with one another. Coatis have double jointed ankles, allowing them to walk straight down a tree headfirst! They sleep, mate, and give birth in the trees, using their tails for balance, but are just as much at home foraging on the ground. In addition to controlling insect populations, coatis contribute to the ecosystem as seed dispersers for many different plant species. #coati #animals #coatimundi #wildlifeeducation #sciencecommunication #endandgered #wildlife #wildlifephotography #conservation #southamerica #savespecies #endextinction #wildlifeconservation #biodiversity #savetheplanet #columbia #argentina #peru #jungle #photography #worthmorealive #ecuador #brazil #mexico #animalsofinstagram #wildlife_seekers #animal #mammals #nasua #animales When the Mississippi Slimy Salamander is attacked it will secrete a slimy, glue-like substance from its tail that gets stuck in a predators mouth—causing it to release the salamander.
This is 1 of 13 closely related members in the slimy salamander species complex distributed throughout most the southern and eastern US. Females faithfully guard their eggs from predators, microbial infections, and rival females—often times not even eating until the eggs hatch 3 months later! Nests are made under rocks, logs, or in caves and studies have shown that a female may return to the exact same nest site for up to 3 seasons in a row! Slimies are in the Plethodontid salamander family so they have no lungs and breathe entirely through their skin. #wildlifeeducation #sciencecommunication #nature #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #animals #animal #naturephotography #wildlife_perfection #wild #worthmorealive #savespecies #endextinction #wildlifeconservation #wildlifeplanet #savetheplanet #biodiversity #salamander #amphibian #forest #cute #amphibiansofinstagram #herpetology #amphibians Mountain Gorillas, despite being one of the largest primates, seldom exhibit their immense strength.
They are in fact rather gentle animals, living in highly social groups of 4-30 females & juveniles and one adult male known as the ‘silverback’. They prefer to spend their days lounging about eating their favorite roots, shoots, fruits and leaves and can consume up to 75lbs of vegetation a day! In the wild there are ~1000 left, inhabiting the lush mountain forests of Africa at 8000-13000ft. Their thick fur distinguishes them from other gorilla species and keeps them warm at such high altitudes. These lizards have smooth and shiny scales that are underlain with a mosaic of small bony deposits, providing a shell of armor all the way around the skink. Most females solitarily lay 2-3 eggs in the moist leaf litter. However, in coastal marsh habitats females have been documented to nest communally inside of alligator nests laying over 900 eggs! #reptile #lizardsofinstagram #reptilesofinstagram #lizards #reptiles #reptilesofig #lizardlove #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wild #wildlife_perfection #animals #wildlife_seekers #animal #lizard #skink #localwildlife #herpetology #sciencecommunication #wildlifeonearth #wilderness #forestlife #instanature #naturelover The eastern box turtle gets its name because it has a hinge on its plastron (underside of shell) that allows it to completely close off its head and legs to predators.
It is quite effective as you can see in pictures 2 (front end) & 3 (rear end) and as a result, adult box turtles have very few predators. However, these turtles are listed as a vulnerable species and are declining because of habitat destruction and vehicle collisions. Below are some easy ways you can help save this species and others like it! 1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle = keep trash out of turtle habitat! 2. Help with a local stream/lake/ocean cleanup or organize one yourself 3. Follow posted speed limits while driving and continually scan your surroundings for wildlife 4. Spread the word, raising awareness is always the first step in species conservation! #turtlesofinstagram #tortoise #turtle #turtles #reptile #tortoises #tortoisesofinstagram #animalsofinstagram #conservation #wildlife #endangered #worthmorealive #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #endextinction #endangeredspecies #climatechange #herpetology #recycle #protect #turtleconservancy #savespecies #localwildlife #reptilesofinstagram #wildlife_seekers #environment #biodiversity #wildlifelovers #boxturtle #reptileconservation |
