Sesame Street isn't the only place with a Big Bird!

The ostrich is the largest bird alive and runs across the African savannah at 43mph!

Although they can’t fly with them, ostrich wings are far from useless. Spanning 6 ft, they are used in elaborate mating displays, provide shade for chicks, act as rudders for high speed direction changes while running, and also assist in conserving heat by shielding their exposed legs and flanks.

Somewhat paradoxically, their eggs are larger than any other birds (~3lbs!) BUT in proportion to the adult’s bodyweight, ostrich eggs are actually the smallest of all bird species.
