Nectar Fiends

Widespread throughout eastern and northern Australia and found in many surrounding island chains, the Rainbow Lorikeet is a nectar specialist. It uses its brush-like tongue to scoop out nectar from plants. These colorful birds are usually found in pairs, especially since both sexes provide parental care and food for their chicks which is not very common in the animal kingdom! Rainbow lorikeets are very socially active birds, feeding in groups as large as 20 birds. Lastly, they are known for the their fun loving temperament and often can be seen hanging upside down while eating nectar.
Their conservation status is listed as a species of least concern but sadly that could change as they are one of the many species affected by the ongoing fires in Australia. Checkout the links in my post on koalas to find ways to donate and save beautiful creatures such as this one!
